Where to Shoot: Families

Deciding where to shoot your family session is thankfully one of the easiest parts of scheduling it.

Trust me…the harder part is coordinating your outfits and getting everyone on the same page that day. That’s the real challenge.

But…since this blog post isn’t about that (although now I have an idea for a future one), I’m gonna skip that part for now and share with you some of my favorite locations around town for family photos. Here’s the thing…families are NOT at all one size fits all. So choosing the spot to photograph YOUR family always depends on size, personality and preference. But, these spots are usually workable for any size family and that’s why they made my list…

ROMARE BEARDEN PARK

Romare Bearden is great for all kinds of sessions and although I do personally think it’s a bit overused (don’t kill me…I still love to shoot there…it’s just not unique), but that’s why I make it a point to find a new vantage point EVERY single time I go there. So your photos aren’t going to look like the next families photos. That’s a promise. Even though it’s super popular, it’s still a great spot to capture some fun family memories!

FOURTH WARD PARK

With free street parking almost always available, this downtown park is another one of my favorites. It’s secluded and a bit off the beaten path and while there are just barely visible skyline views, there are great greenery spaces. I love this park for morning sessions as it gets gorgeous morning light!

CULLMAN PARK

This one’s pretty much a secret because VERY few people even know it’s there. I’m not even giving away it’s location here, but just know that I know about it. So we can go if you want! This little tiny park is tucked away in a business park and although it’s not the easiest to find, it can make for a gorgeous backdrop!

ELIZABETH PARK

It’s centrally located. It’s got free parking. It’s got lots of places for the little ones to roam. This park really does have it all. And the best thing is that it has a bit more of a city feel so you won’t feel like you’re lost in a forest. It’s probably one of my favs.

KILBORNE PARK

Want to really not worry about traffic, parking or people photobombing your shots? Kilborne Park is the jam. While it’s mostly a frisbee golf spot (so we just have to stay out of their way), it’s also got some gorgeous places with beautiful light that frame families perfectly. It’s high up on my list and a favorite of my fall mini sessions.

BB&T BALLPARK

I love this spot for families with older kids and those who love sports. The architecture and surroundings make this a must visit spot for families who want to exclude nature from their portraits!

YOUR HOME

While this may sound strange to you, where else are you more comfortable? Besides, there’s no worry about parking. It’s completely free. And you can utilize your own personal spaces…which is super cool when you print and hang these photos in your home…that they were taken in.
