How to Get Stunning Ring Shots | Tips for Couples & Photographers

There’s something undeniably captivating about a beautifully photographed ring. Whether you’re newly engaged or celebrating your wedding day, those tiny but mighty symbols of love deserve their own moment in the spotlight. For photographers, capturing that perfect ring shot is an art form that takes patience, creativity, and the right gear.

In this post, I’m going to share my favorite tips for getting breathtaking ring shots—whether you’re the couple preparing for your big day or the photographer behind the lens.

1. The Right Lens Makes All the Difference

To get those crisp, detailed shots of the ring, a good macro lens is your best friend. I personally use the Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro Lens—it’s my go-to for capturing all those intricate details like the diamond’s facets, the band’s engraving, and the sparkle that catches the light just right.

A macro lens allows you to get up close without sacrificing sharpness, and that’s crucial for making the ring look as stunning in photos as it does in person.

2. Bring the Right Styling Elements

Whether you’re a photographer or a couple, having some styling items on hand can really elevate those ring shots. Here are some of my go-to items for adding texture and elegance:

  • Tulle or Lace: Soft, romantic textures that create beautiful backdrops

  • Jewelry and Veil: Elements that tie back to the bride’s look add cohesion to the image

  • Greenery and Flowers: Fresh florals or simple leaves can create dimension and softness

  • Shoes or Invitations: These add context and tell a bigger part of your story

Pro Tip for Couples: If you have any meaningful items (like a grandmother's handkerchief or a special letter), bring those along for your photographer to style with the rings.

3. The Beauty of Strong Shadows

I love to play with shadows when shooting rings. Placing the ring in direct sunlight or using a sheer fabric to cast interesting patterns creates mood and depth. It’s a simple trick that makes the shot feel more cinematic and artistic.

4. Always Check for Engravings

This one is a big one—always check the inside of the rings! Whether it’s a date, initials, or a meaningful word, those tiny engravings are part of your story. I always make it a point to photograph them if they’re there. It’s such a personal touch that couples often forget about until they see the images later.

5. Timing is Everything

For photographers: I know we all hate asking couples to take off their rings once they're finally married, so I always request all three rings (engagement ring and both wedding bands) before the ceremony even starts. This way, I can capture them beautifully, and the couple never has to part with them after saying, "I do."

Pro Tip for Couples: Consider having the rings together and ready before the ceremony so your photographer can grab those shots easily and you never have to worry about taking them off again.

6. Get Creative with Your Backgrounds

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to backgrounds. I’ve used everything from:

  • Velvet ring boxes

  • Wood grain tables for rustic vibes

  • Marble countertops for a sleek, modern look

  • Outdoor textures like moss, rocks, or even the pages of a favorite book

The ring is the centerpiece, but the background helps set the scene.
